Go-go! DC’s pride. When I was younger, and my radio would wander through the dial, on weekend nights (in the DC suburbs, where I lived), the ultra-percussive sounds of go-go always intrigued me. At first, I think I didn’t like it. Or, perhaps it was just that I was influenced by the general sentiment amongst middle-class suburban middle school kids that go-go was more something for the urban, black people, in the actual city.

In any case, eventually I came to love it (when it came on), even though most people would be like, “Can you change it?” whenever I left it on in the car. I guess I was not spending much time with musically like-minded people.

Wikipedia has some decent info on go-go.

Here is one of the classic songs, “Body Snatchers,” by Rare Essence:

This is another one I found on YouTube, by Northeast Groovers:

Other bands to check out include the Junkyard Band. I also saw that some go-go bands played at Obama inauguration parties.

I really wonder where go-go came from and if there are related variations in other nearby cities.

hell yeah, I’ve been listening to so much Go Go lately. Check this out

only blog I have found with downloadable Go Go zips(and porn too haha). 2009 ones even. I would totally be down to support these cats by actually buying the cds, but I don’t live out there and most of the sites to buy bootlegs are kinda weird. I imagine they make most of their money off of playing shows anyways, since it is totally a live thing.

Was away and not keeping up with things but just saw this link. Thanks! Go Go doesn’t seem to be so well documented. I wonder though if anyone has tried making a go go documentary.
